Profile

Dr Ting Xie is the Kerry Holdings Professor of Science and a Chair Professor in the Division of Life Science. Prior to his arrival at HKUST in 2021, he was an Investigator and Professor at Stowers Institute and the University of Kansas Medical Center. His main research interests include the study of stem cell biology and tissue regeneration. Indeed, he is a pioneer and one of the leaders in elucidating the stem cell niche and self-renewal mechanisms. For example, Dr Xie and his research team demonstrated the existence of distinct niches for stem cell self-renewal and stem cell progeny differentiation. His team also discovered how these niches interact to control stem cell development for tissue maintenance and regeneration. More recently, Dr Xie has started to investigate the mechanisms underlying retinal degenerative diseases and explored new treatment strategies, including stem cell and gene therapies. To date, Dr Xie has published more than 70 articles in high-profile journals, including Science, Nature, and Cell. He received the Hudson Award in 2003 and is currently serving on the scientific advisory board of The Glaucoma Foundation and The Y-LOT Foundation. He is also on the editorial board of Cell Research and Development, as well as eight other scientific journals.
